International Policy Symposium on the Connection between Population Dynamics, Reproductive Health and Rights and Climate Change

This is a one-day International Policy Symposium; the first to address the links between population dynamics, sexual and reproductive health and rights and climate change.  It is being held at a critical time; after the Copenhagen Climate Change summit, and before the 2010 UK General Election.

Regular information will be posted on MDG5 and its two targets of reducing maternal mortality by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and universal access to reproductive health by 2015, as part of the 10th anniversary of the Millennium Development Goals.

Outcome

The meeting resulted in a Call to Action that makes recommendations for specific programmes and for actions to reach the maternal health goal by 2015. The results of the meeting were presented by Minister Koenders at the Fourth International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action (IPCI/ICPD IV), which took place from 27 to 28 October at the same venue, the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa.

Call to Action from High-Level meeting in Addis Ababa

The High-Level Meeting, held a day before the International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, was organized to push maternal health higher on the political agenda and increase political and financial commitment for improving maternal health at the country level. The one-day event was organized by Bert Koenders, Minister for Development Cooperation of the Netherlands and UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and was hosted by the Government of Ethiopia.

Kathmandu Declaration on Reproductive Health Commodity Security

The Declaration agreed by participants from  the following SAARC countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka participated in a workshop on advocating for universal access to reproductive health services and commodity security, 28–30 July 2009 in Kathmandu, Nepal urges Ministers, parliamentarians, health programmes managers and others to: 

  • devote sufficient priority, commitment and resources to interventions, policies and strategies for reducing maternal mortality;
  • provide a separate annual incremental budget line for reproductive health within the health budget that adequately supports services, and strengthen national capacity in management and security of commodities;
  • ensure that sexual and reproductive health and rights, and research are integrated within national health strategies and action plans, to the fullest extent possible.
